The manufacturing of a quality shoe relies on noble materials and precise craftsmanship. However, a discreet element guarantees the strength and longevity of the whole: the sewing thread.
Whether you are producing luxury footwear or safety boots, the choice of thread determines the durability of your assembly. As a leading French manufacturer, Sigier Capelle supports bootmakers and industrial footwear producers with technical solutions tailored to every construction method.

Why is the Choice of Shoe Sewing Thread Crucial for Your Assembly?
Each manufacturing technique imposes specific mechanical stresses on the thread. A robust construction requires high tensile strength and controlled elasticity. Consequently, you must select your thread based on the type of stitch used:
- Stitchdown (Sandalette) construction
- Norwegian welt
- Moccasin stitching

Goodyear and Norwegian Welting
These two iconic high-end footwear techniques require exceptionally robust threads. For Goodyear welting, the thread connects the upper, the insole, and the welt. It undergoes significant tension during walking.
The Norwegian welt, recognisable by its visible stitching, requires a thread that is both aesthetic and waterproof. Therefore, we recommend large diameters, often waxed (poissé) to ensure the perforations remain watertight.
In summary: The heavy-duty Sigier Capelle threads are references 6316 (the thickest), followed by 6312, 4216, and 4212.
Blake Stitch and Petit Point
Blake construction goes right through the entire sole. The thread is therefore in direct contact with the interior of the shoe and ground wear. It must be fine yet extremely strong.
Conversely, the Petit Point (lockstitch) is used to attach the outsole to the welt. This finishing stitch requires perfect regularity for an impeccable visual result on the edge of the shoe.
For these finer applications, Sigier Capelle recommends references 2116 and 2112.
Stitchdown, Kneipp, and Side Stitching
Stitchdown (Sandalette) and Kneipp constructions are common in children’s footwear and leisure models, where flexibility is a priority. The thread must follow the natural movement of the foot without cutting through the leather. For side stitching (cupsole), often used on modern trainers and sneakers, the thread ensures perfect cohesion between the upper and the sole unit.
Hand-Lacing and Ornamental Stitching
Hand-lacing represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Here, the thread becomes a decorative element in its own right, highlighting the shoe’s lines, as seen on luxury moccasins. Sigier Capelle offers threads whose sheen and texture enhance this meticulous manual work (typically using a coloured, untreated thread).
Which Types of Footwear Use Our Sewing Threads?
Our products equip a wide range of models, meeting all industry needs:

What is the Sigier Capelle Shoe Thread Range?
We design our threads to meet the demands of the fastest sewing machines as well as the precise movements of artisans.
Four main materials by Sigier Capelle
Our catalogue focuses on four main materials:
- Polyester Thread: The most versatile solution. It offers excellent resistance to UV rays and chemicals and retains its mechanical properties even in damp conditions.
- Polyamide (Nylon) Thread: Notable for its remarkable elasticity and abrasion resistance. It absorbs mechanical shocks without breaking.
- Spun Polyester: Mimics the appearance of cotton while offering synthetic strength, providing a traditional matt finish.
- Linen (The historical choice): Distinguished by its prestige and eco-friendly natural origin. This vegetable fibre offers exceptional tensile strength with virtually no stretch.
Focus on Linen
It is the preferred choice for traditional hand-sewn constructions (waxed stitch). Furthermore, its authentic texture brings an incomparable rustic yet high-end appeal to luxury footwear. Lastly, its temperature-regulating and antibacterial properties ensure optimal hygiene at the very heart of the leather assembly.

Coloured shoe sewing threads
Sigier Capelle offers these thread ranges in a wide choice of colours, allowing you to match the sewing thread perfectly to your leathers.
Furthermore, we also offer a bespoke service to develop new colours based on Pantone references.

Which Treatments Optimise Thread Performance?
Raw thread is not always enough to guarantee the quality of a shoe. This is why Sigier Capelle applies specific surface treatments to improve both the sewing process and the protection of the finished product.
Waxed Treatment (Poissé)
Waxed thread is impregnated with a tacky substance that facilitates its passage through leather.
This treatment allows the thread to lock itself into the needle hole. Consequently, the stitching does not loosen, even if a stitch happens to break. This is the industry standard for Goodyear and Norwegian welting. The Sigier Capelle references are CBJC and TSM. CBJC is heavily waxed, while TSM is lightly waxed.
Water-Repellent Treatment
Our water-repellent treatment prevents water from rising through the thread via capillary action.
As a result, feet stay dry and the internal components of the shoe do not degrade.
The Sigier Capelle reference for this shoe sewing thread is 305.
Heat-Setting Treatment (Fixation)
Heat-setting stabilises the thread. This process prevents the thread from twisting or knotting during high-speed sewing.
This results in smoother production and reduces costly machine downtime. The references for heat-setting are 503 or 503 fort.
Why Choose Sigier Capelle as Your French Manufacturer?
Choosing Sigier Capelle means choosing a local partner that master’s the entire production chain. Based in Northern France, we guarantee 100% French manufacturing, rigorous quality control, and full traceability.
We act as technical advisors, helping you define the ideal diameter, material, and treatment for your specific project.
How to Maintain Your Shoe Stitching?
Thread quality is paramount, but maintenance also plays a major role. Well-maintained stitching extends the life of the shoe.
- Clean regularly with a soft brush to remove abrasive dust.
- Apply a nourishing cream to hydrate the thread, especially for natural or waxed fibres.
- Use shoe trees to maintain tension and prevent unnecessary stress on the threads.
- Avoid direct heat sources which can weaken synthetic fibres or dry out treatments.
The Future of Shoe Sewing Thread
The industry is moving towards eco-design. We are already developing threads made from recycled polyester, while linen remains one of our most ecological traditional options.
